What's included

What your safety program covers

The parts of DOT safety compliance most carriers only think about after an audit.

Incident response

A clear process for accidents and incidents, from first call to documentation.

Drug & alcohol program

Random testing pool management and program administration handled to FMCSA standard.

Driver qualification files

DQ files kept current — medical cards, MVRs, and annual reviews on schedule.

Roadside inspection review

Every inspection reviewed for patterns before they become a CSA problem.

Policy documentation

Written safety policies your carrier can point to if a broker or insurer asks.

Understanding the score

What actually goes into a CSA score

CSA stands for Compliance, Safety, Accountability — the FMCSA's data-driven program for tracking carrier safety performance. It pulls from roadside inspections, violations, and crash data over a rolling two-year window, then scores your carrier from 0 to 100 in seven categories called BASICs (Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories). Lower is better.

Your score in each BASIC is compared against carriers of similar size, so a single bad inspection can move the needle more than it would for a larger fleet. That's part of why small carriers often see scores swing more than they expect from what feels like one isolated event.

A poor score in any BASIC can trigger increased roadside inspections, DOT intervention, higher insurance premiums, and brokers passing on your trucks in favor of a carrier with a cleaner record. It doesn't directly determine your safety rating, but it heavily influences who gets to see it and how it gets read.

Common questions

Safety — frequently asked

How are CSA BASIC scores calculated?
Each BASIC score is built from roadside inspection results, violations, and crash data over a rolling 24-month period, weighted by severity and recency, then compared against carriers of similar size.
What happens if my CSA score is bad?
A poor score in any BASIC can trigger more frequent roadside inspections, FMCSA intervention, higher insurance premiums, and brokers choosing another carrier over yours — even before it affects your official safety rating.
Will this actually lower my CSA score?
We can't promise a number, but ongoing monitoring catches the small, fixable issues — expired documents, unaddressed violations — that quietly drag scores up over time.
Do you handle the FMCSA random testing pool?
Yes, drug and alcohol program administration including random selection is part of the safety service.
What happens if I get a roadside inspection violation?
We review it, flag anything that needs a driver conversation or process fix, and track it so it doesn't repeat.
Is this a replacement for insurance?
No. Safety program management reduces risk and keeps documentation in order, but it isn't insurance coverage itself.
